Calculation

Index Calculation and Dissemination

NASDAQ OMX Global Financial Products calculates and disseminates indexes real-time and end-of-day in price return and total return variations. Additionally, GFP calculates and disseminates indexes that are broad market, industry sector, country or theme-based. GFPs index data is available through two products - NASDAQ OMX Index Dissemination Service (NIDS)SM and NASDAQ Index Watch.

Index Administration

NASDAQ OMX Global Financial Products handles the administration of indexes for ongoing maintenance and continuity. Index administration requires daily review and maintenance to ensure the integrity of all the indexes NASDAQ OMX calculates and disseminates. We track corporate actions daily to determine potential component or share changes and offsetting divisor adjustments. Week-to-week, we monitor total shares outstanding and schedule share changes to index components, as necessary, in relation to the relevant index thresholds.

Options Market

The NASDAQ Options Market

NASDAQ has developed an equity and index options market based on its corporate principles of openness, fairness, transparency and speed, which is pending SEC approval and anticipated to launch in late 2007. The new NASDAQ Options Market is built on the integrated NASDAQ platform and features price/time priority allocation with no designated market makers. All NASDAQ members can participate and price improvement is offered to users on an immediate and automatic basis. To learn more, visit www.nasdaqtrader.com/options.

The NASDAQ ETF Market reflects NASDAQ's market structure:

  • Competitive: Multiple market makers competing for price and trade executions

  • Transparent: Full price disclosure to investors

  • Accessible: Trade executions measured in milliseconds

  • Proven Technology: Opening/closing cross process

ETF Market

The NASDAQ ETF Market

Leveraging NASDAQ's strength in trading, indexing and investor outreach, NASDAQ has created the NASDAQ ETF Market, designed specifically for exchange traded funds and index-linked notes. NASDAQ is best positioned to help sponsors create, grow and evolve ETFs into liquid investment tools. By trading volume, NASDAQ is the world's largest exchange for ETFs. The NASDAQ ETF Market provides less-liquid ETFs with a designated Liquidity Provider that is incentive-based to trade qualified ETFs. It offers a structure for issuers and traders to interact based on the needs of the issuer as they vary throughout the life cycle of the ETF. ETF issuers may choose one or multiple ETF Liquidity Providers. NASDAQ requires that ETF Liquidity Providers maintain a market quality standard measured by spread, depth and time quoting at or near the inside quote. In return, NASDAQ gives ETF Liquidity Providers a preferred rebate program. To learn more, visit www.nasdaq.com.

PORTAL Market

The NASDAQ PORTAL Market

NASDAQ has managed the process to designate 144A securities as PORTAL securities since 1990. Serving the investment needs of broker-dealers, qualified institutional buyers and private and public companies from around the world, the NASDAQ PORTAL MarketSM facilitates the quoting and trading of unregistered securities eligible to be resold pursuant to SEC Rule 144A. PORTAL provides regulatory review of qualified 144A equity, fixed income and derivative securities that, in turn, allows those securities access to the clearance and settlement services of the Depository Trust Company (DTC). NASDAQ created a new, customized trading system exclusively for 144A debt and equity securities providing a transparent, one-stop solution from negotiation through settlement.
